| How did Magoosh help you? I used Magoosh TOEFL prep and followed the 1-month study plan for the TOEFL iBT test. Without Magoosh materials I would not have been able to score 110 points (R = 29, L = 30, S = 29, W = 22). Recap of the exam: Reading section - 4 passages. 80 minutes. I spent 25 minutes on the first passage because I read the passage before I started answering questions. This was a bad decision. For the next three paragraphs I changed my strategy and used the one that You proposed - go straight to questions. This was very helpful as I finished the other three passages in 50 minutes and had 5 minutes to check some of the answers that I was unsure of. Listening section - Two sets of 17 questions each. While practicing I answered the questions quickly, but during the exam I took my time to work through all the answers choices and find the best possible option for every question. 30 points prove that this was the right strategy. Speaking section - First independent speaking question was awful. I spoke for 30 seconds, had a 5 second mental breakdown/mute mode, and during the remaining 10 seconds I repeated what I said in the beginning. I told myself that this is not the way to perform and there are five more tasks ahead, so I regrouped and found my focus. The rest of the speaking questions went well and I had a good feeling about them. Even though I felt that I messed up one question the overall score for the speaking section was very good. Writing section - Magoosh materials for writing the integrated essay really helped me as they pointed out what exactly should I include and how the essay should be structured. Final essay was around 250 words with three body paragraphs and an introduction. I spent 1 minute thinking what to write, 15 minutes to write the essay, and 4 minutes to proofread. In contrast to the integrated one, the independent essay was not my cup of tea. The topic was something which I have not given much thought and I struggled finding content and examples. I aimed to write a five paragraph essay with an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Probably two of the body paragraphs overlapped and it was difficult for the reader to follow the ideas because they were not well developed. I knew straight away that the independent essay was the weakest part of my exam. |
